Case Studies... Addressing Maintenance Concerns

The Challenge:
Steel hollow metal doors and frames, rusting out along the bottom of the door and frame jambs. Paint peeling, exterior sheet separating from foam or hardboard backer.

The Solution:
Cross Aluminum's FL-400-F-S1 flush doors with an anodized finish. The interlocking tubular extrusions not only eliminate the chance of skins buckling, but at the same time form an extensive interior reinforcement. The anodized finish is very low maintenance. A periodic cleansing with T-43 Xylene and brushing with a soft bristle, nylon brush and the doors will maintain their brand new look.

The Challenge:
Matching exterior color schemes to match other products such as windows, facades, and other building components. Maintaining its color while holding up to weather and UV sun rays.

The Solution:
Premium performance painted finishes. Duranar, Kynar, and Trinar architectural coatings are available from standard colors to exotic and specialty colors. A variety of colors are available. If you can dream it, it probably can be created. These architectural grade paints do not fade like the paints and materials used on hollow metal steel entrances or fiberglass/plastic doors. There are a variety of warranties available from the coating industries that guarantee the finishes and colors for years.

The Challenge:
To provide an entrance that would allow for maximum natural light into the foyers or hallways, and yet, because of the volume of traffic flow, abuse, and normal wear and tear, remain maintenance free.

The Solution:
Cross Aluminum's WS-500-DG stile & rail glass doors. This door is made with tubular extrusions and 3/16" thick walls. A ten inch base meets ADA, while a six inch head rail allows for enough mounting area to place the door closer without having to use a drop plate. A mid-rail across the center of the door allows for two smaller pieces of glass (less costly and easier to replace) to be used, and allows for another tie rod to be placed through the center of the door for added strength. It also provides a mounting area to hide the panic exit devices from view from the outside of the building. The glass can vary in thickness from 1/4" to 1". Using this heavy-duty stile & rail glass door solves both requirements of durability and maximum natural light.

The Challenge:
Provide overhead concealed stops in the top of the doors while maintaining a good weather seal between the door and the frame.

The Solution:
Cross Aluminum's heavy-duty extruded doorstop. This is a snap-in doorstop that is 5/8" high. The additional height of the stop plus the wool pile weatherstrip guarantees a better seal to stop air and water infiltration where the concealed overhead stop is mounted in the top of the door. The Challenge:
Door closer loosening from the doors, and PA closer mounting brackets pulling out of the frame headers.

The Solution:
Even though we have not experienced a lot of maintenance calls concerning the closer coming loose from the face of our doors, we decided to increase the strength in this area of our door anyway. We placed additional plates inside the top portion of our extrusions to cover the area where the closer is usually mounted. This increases the wall thickness to 1/4". Most door manufacturers require that the closer be mounted on the door with through-bolts. This is because the door does not have the interior structural integrity to keep the closer from coming loose or falling off the door. It is not aesthetically pleasing to see four big screw heads on the outside of the door, especially when they are tightened down so tightly that the screw heads cause dimples in the face of the door. Cross Aluminum doors do not require through-bolts because of the internal structural strength.

We also addressed the maintenance issue of frame headers looking like Swiss cheese from having so many holes drilled in them due to re-mounting of the PA closer bracket. Our extra heavy-duty door stop is 3/16" thick x 1/2" (or) 5/8" high x 1-1/2" wide and has solved the problem. Architects, contractors, and maintenance personnel have tried to come up with all kinds of solutions for reinforcing the frames to solve the problem of these loosening brackets. This innovative idea has provided a cost effective, timesaving, and structural solution. Cross Aluminum Products continues to be a leader in simple engineering solutions to those nagging maintenance problems.
